New South Wales was the first state colonised in Australia, and Sydney, it's capital, is Australia's largest city, in terms of population.  The state offers a wide variety of scenery from the beautiful coastal vistas to the dry, sparse central areas. It should also be noted that there is an intense rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne, Victoria! which goes a long way towards explaining the Australian Capital Territory! :)
